Absence Line Contact Details:
There may be times when your child has to miss school. If your child is ill, contact the school on each day of your child's illness stating their name, tutor group and full details of their absence. Stating a child is "sick, unwell or poorly" is not accepted as we need the full reason to provide to the local authority. You will be contacted by the Attendance Office if your child is absent from school without notice.
To advise your child will be absent from school or late, please contact us by 8.30am in one of the following ways:

Academy procedures for addressing poor attendance:
We will address poor attendance of a student in the following ways:
If a student's attendance drops below 95% a letter will be sent to you confirming your child's attendance and advising of the need for the attendance to improve.
If no improvement is recorded then the following intervention stages are triggered:
When a student's attendance falls below 95%, a letter will be sent to you advising you that future absences will be subject to providing medical evidence to support the absence.
If the attendance continues to fall below 92% (Persistent Absence Threshold) you will be contacted to attend a meeting with the Attendance Officer. A plan/set of strategies will be put in place to encourage good attendance as a supportive measure.
If there is still no improvement, you will be contacted to attend a meeting with your child's Year Leader. It may be necessary for the school to refer the case to the Early Help Family Support Service who may conduct home visits.
If there is still no improvement, you will be contacted to attend a meeting with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. If all interventions are unsuccessful, you will be invited to attend a review panel meeting. This meeting will include a member of the Early Help, Family Support and Youth Offending Services and a member of the governing body. At this meeting, a final warning letter will be given with a view to issuing you with a fixed penalty notice.
Attendance at Post 16 is calculated on attendance to timetabled lessons. Please speak to Mrs Buckley if you have any queries.
The threshold for Persistent Absence- as defined by the DfE - is 90% attendance.
The chart below shows how many sessions/days absent a child needs to accrue to have 90% attendance in school time:

Education Welfare Service:
Education Welfare Service Involvement - to include Fixed Penalty Notices, School Action Meetings
- Should the Education Welfare Service choose to hold a School Action Meeting, Parents/Carer's will be invited to attend a meeting at the academy to discuss their child's attendance and why the plan or strategies put in place have been unsuccessful. At this point the Educational Welfare Officer may choose to put in place their own plan and/or monitor for an agreed period of time.
- Should further absences accrue or no progress is made at any time during the monitoring period, the Educational Welfare Officer may decide to issue a Fixed a penalty Notice of £60 as an alternative to prosecution. This rises to £120 if unpaid after 21 days. Failure to pay will lead to prosecution. Parents/Carers can be fined up to £2500 and/or imprisoned for failing to ensure that their child attends school regularly.
- The Educational Welfare Service could instigate Legal Proceedings or apply for an Education Supervision Order to be placed on the Child and parent/career as an alternative to a Fixed Penalty Notice.
At times it is necessary for us to request medical evidence from parents to allow us to authorise their children's absence from school. Please see below a guide to what is accepted as Medical Evidence:
- GP/Dental appointment card with date of appointment attended.
- Medical Appointment letter.
- Empty prescribed medication packet with dispensing label attached.
- Copy of prescription.
- White return page of prescription ie; repeat prescription request.
- Medical letter* from GP or medical professional advising student is unfit to attend school.
- Medical Certificate*.
- Compliment slip* from a Nurse at student's medical practice confirming they are unfit to attend school.
*Medical Certificates from online GP services will not be accepted. Certificates must be produced from your local GP that you are registered with. They must have physically seen your child and deemed them unfit for school.
Please note that it is the Parent's/Carer's responsibility to provide the medical evidence when requested by the school.
The school will not request or chase up medical evidence from GP's/Consultants/Dentists etc.
Medical appointments - We ask that medical appointments such as Dental, Doctor, Orthodontist and Hospital appointments should be outside of school hours. Should this not be possible, we expect the students to attend school beforehand and to return to school once the appointment has concluded.
Holiday Request or Exceptional Circumstances:
Pupils are expected to attend every session available to them throughout the school year.
Under section 7 of the education Act 1996, there is no entitlement for you to take your child on holiday during term time. You may be fined for taking your child on holiday during term time without consent of the Academy.
Should parents wish to make an application for a child's absence, they should complete an Absence Request Form, available from the Academy reception. This form asks parents to explain the reason for the intended absence and details of the exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are defined as "rare, significant, unavoidable and short". The Principal will consider the circumstances for absence and confirm in writing whether the absence will be marked authorised or unauthorised on the student's attendance record. Each request will be judged on a case by case basis. If an event can be reasonably scheduled outside of term-time then it would not be normal to authorise absence for such an event - holidays are therefore not considered 'exceptional circumstances'.
Should the absence be unauthorised and you choose to take the unauthorised leave from the school, then the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service (EWS). They may choose to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice to you.
A £60 penalty notice may be issued by the EWS to each parent or carer for each child, to be paid within 21 days. If this is not paid within the 21-day period, it will increase to £120. If this is not paid within 28 days, parents or carer's will be prosecuted in the magistrates' court for failing to ensure their children attend school regularly. This could result in each parent or carer receiving a fine of up to £2,500 and / or three months imprisonment for failing to ensure your child regularly attends school.
Holidays that are either taken in the first 2 weeks of September or carry over from the summer break into the returning first week of term, will be referred to the Local Authority. They may decide to issue a Penalty Notice to parents/carers of that child.
What happens if my child is late for school?
Should your child arrive to school after 8.40am then they will receive a "late" mark on their attendance record for morning registration. An accumulation of 2 late marks in the period of a week (Thursday to Thursday) will result in a 75 minute Friday detention with Mr Stalham.
Should your son or daughter's punctuality not improve over a period of time, your child will be placed on a Punctuality Report and a meeting with parents will be scheduled.
If your child arrives after 10am they will be marked with a "U" code showing that they arrived after the start of the first lesson. The "U" code is an unauthorised absence code and will be used unless sufficient evidence is received regarding the absence i.e. medical evidence. This code will affect your child's overall attendance percentage. Students will however be marked in for each individual lessons they attend for fire regulation purposes.

It is extremely important that you communicate with the Academy should your child be absent from school for a defined period of time. Once the circumstances for the absence have been discussed, we will inform your child's Progress Leader and ensure work is sent home for completion where appropriate.

Behaviour & Expectations
Mobile Phone Ban:
In order to further safeguard our students and ensure that pupils are focused on their learning, Belfairs Academy became a Mobile Phone/Smart Devices free site from September 2019. Students are now not permitted to use their phones or Smart Devices anywhere on the academy premises. This has ensured that students are not distracted from their studies and academy staff can spend more time supporting pupils with their learning. The Senior Leadership Team would like to extend sincere thanks to students, parents and carers who have supported the Academy with regard to this issue, the benefit of which is already very clear.
Below is the essential equipment list:
• Pencil Case (preferably clear so it can be used for examinations)
• Black pen
• Pencil Sharpener
• 15 cm ruler
• Scientific calculator (students should already have these and bring them every day for their maths lessons)
The following equipment is highly desired:
• Green pen
• Glue stick
• Compass (technical drawing)
The academy has a range of equipment available to buy from our reprographics department. We have pencil cases with equipment, for £2. This can be paid for by uploading £2 on ParentPay.
Students must have a bag big enough to fit an A4 book in. Please check that your child's school bag can fit the necessary books and equipment.
Classroom Code of Conduct
Classrooms, laboratories, technology areas and sports facilities are your place of work. In any workplace there needs to be clearly defined codes of practice and expectations to enable everyone to work in a safe and pleasant environment. It would therefore be helpful if everyone followed the same codes of practice:
1. At the start of the lesson
- Arrive punctually and wait sensibly.
- Enter the classroom quietly on the signal of the teacher.
- Take out books, pens and equipment and put bags away.
- Remain quiet while the register is being taken.
- Expect teachers to enforce the rules, which apply to uniform and jewellery.
2. During the lesson
- Listen when the teacher is giving out information or instructions.
- Raise your hand to ask or answer questions.
- Work sensibly with those around you. Annoying or distracting others is detrimental to you and other students.
- Students who are late with no just cause should expect to be detained for explanation and to make up the work missed.
- All food and drink should be consumed outside the classroom.
- Mobile phones, any other portable devices, MP3 players, gaming machines, magazines, or other distractions are not allowed and will be confiscated.
- Obtain staff permission if it is necessary to leave the room.
- Homework must be recorded and completed as directed.
3. At the end of the lesson
- Wait for the teacher to tell you to pack away.
- When told to do so, stand and put chairs under or on the desks as instructed.
- Leave the room as you would wish to find it. Place any litter in the bin.
- Wait quietly until your teacher dismisses you.
4. Please remember...
Teachers are in the position of parents/guardians while you are in school and in that respect:
- Requests from teachers should be carried out immediately without argument.
- There is no excuse for rudeness, disrespect or insolence towards any member of the school staff.
Good habits will lessen the need for teacher instruction and will promote a more enjoyable working atmosphere.

The Pathways Curriculum
At Belfairs Academy students follow a personalised pathways curriculum. This curriculum matches their skills, abilities and individual needs. The principle behind this is to provide a curriculum diet that stretches and challenges at all levels and allows students to make progress at all times.
There are four pathways: Purple, Red, Blue and Green.
Each subject has their own boundaries for the four pathways and lessons are designed to match the learning needs within them. A student can be in different pathways for different subjects, for example, a red pathway for English and History and a blue for Science. Students will also be able to move within the pathways depending on their progress. Progress within the pathways will be reviewed each half term and opportunities for movement will be identified.

Girls on Board
The 'Girls on Board' initiative started at Belfairs in November 2018 and is designed to support young girls with peer relationships.

Homework & Revision Centre
Research over a number of years in this country and other countries has shown that homework can make an important contribution to students' progress in school.
Your child has access to Show My Homework, where their homework will be posted as per the schedule set out below.
Students, who may have difficulty in working at home, will be encouraged to make full use of the study facilities provided by the Learning Resource Centre. There is a Homework Club as per the extra-curricular/enrichment timetable with staff available to support students.
Years 7 and 8
Homework for Years 7 and 8 students will be set weekly for core subjects and fortnightly for all other subjects. Practical subjects may set practical or written work.
Years 9, 10 and 11
Homework for Years 9, 10 and 11 students will be set weekly for all subjects. At peak times there may be additional homework set.
*Science - Triple Science teachers will set three times per week: 1 for each of the Sciences.
Years 12 and 13
Subjects are expected to set one substantive piece of homework per week, in addition to reading, note-taking, preparation for lessons etc.
It is recommended that Post 16 students should complete 2 hours of independent study per subject per week, in addition to any homework and private study work set by their subject teachers.
Purpose of Homework:
- To encourage students to develop the skills, confidence and motivation needed to study effectively on their own - to promote self-discipline and independent learning.
- To consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding developed at school.
- To prepare for future class work.
- To develop skills in using libraries and other learning resources.
- To extend school learning - for example through research and extension work, coursework, additional reading, use of resources' only available outside school.
- To provide feedback to the students and teacher of the student's knowledge, skills and understanding of work tackled in school.
- To manage particular external demands, such as KS4 coursework.
- To provide opportunities for developing the home-school partnership.

At Belfairs, we recognise that our students want to go above and beyond and have access to additional revision to further stretch themselves. To meet this need we have created a revision centre which will be uploaded regularly.
To access the revision centre your child needs their school email address and the password they have set to access the school computers. If they are unsure of any of this information, they should ask their tutor.
Leading Parental Partnership Award
The academy achieved the Leading Parental Partnership Award in July 2018. We would like to thank all parents and carers who have attended academy events over the course of last academic year. We have enjoyed listening to your views on a range of topics relating to academy life. Your thoughts and experiences are important to us and we hope that as a consequence of our home/school partnership all students at Belfairs Academy are given the best opportunity to achieve their potential.
We have, of course, scheduled many more opportunities this academic year, for parents and carers to participate in academy events and to give voice to their opinions and ideas about academy life. You can find details of our academy events on our calendar and on our twitter account (there are links at the bottom of this page).
We always invite parents to share their views, concerns or compliments to the academy through one of the following channels:
By phone - call to your child's Year Leader or the Subject Leader for the different Departments or your child's teachers.
By letter or email - which can be directed in the academy to the appropriate person who will then get in touch with you.
Attend the Parents' Forum - these are held throughout the year, last roughly 45 minutes and at which a key member of staff gives a short talk on an element of the Academy. There is then an opportunity for questions and answers. To see more information on parent forums including the upcoming dates visit the parent forum section of the website here.
Progress Evenings - an opportunity to meet with your child's teachers to discuss their progress, achievement and any barriers that may inhibit them reaching their potential.
Arrange a meeting - you are welcome to arrange to meet with Subject Leaders, Senior Leaders and Class teachers at any point during the year.
There are questionnaires to complete at all events and comments are always welcome. It is good to know what is going well as well as areas that need closer attention.

Literacy at Belfairs
Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history. They will need advanced levels of literacy to perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives. They will need literacy to cope with the flood of information they will find everywhere they turn. They will need literacy to feed their imaginations so they can create the world of the future. In a complex and sometimes even dangerous world, their ability to read can be crucial.
As your child moves to and develops within Secondary school they will need to develop a range of literacy skills. Here at Belfairs Academy we like to encourage our students to be independent learners and to use every opportunity as a way of improving their basic literacy skills.

Lost property is kept in Reception. Any named items that come to lost property are returned to the student directly. Any unnamed uniform items and equipment are kept in Reception for half a term after which they are donated to charity.
If a student loses any item of uniform or equipment they should visit Reception during break or lunchtime to retrieve it as soon as possible. If the lost item is PE or Dance kit, they should go to the relevant department first, and then Reception if they have still not found it.
We ask parents to ensure that all uniform and equipment is clearly named so that any lost items can be returned to students directly.
